90’S FASHION TRENDS THAT ARE BACK TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD

90’S FASHION TRENDS THAT ARE BACK TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

The 90’s seem now but a dream. It twas’ a time of ripped denim and skateboards, when rock music was lo-fi and soda contained outrageous amounts of caffeine and sugar [I miss you Surge!].

The Internet had yet to devolve into a conglomerate of advertising agencies harvesting our metadata like organs in an eastern European hostel dungeon. It was but a place for nerds and lonely people to come together and pirate individual tracks of music with one another. The innocence of it almost brings a tear to my eye.

Of course, the 90’s came to an end. Napster gave way to LimeWire then Pirate Bay and books gave way to iPads and Kindles. But, although nearly 20 years now separates us from this golden era, things are beginning to look very familiar.

Sure, instead of Tech Decks, middle schoolers now express their ADD with fidget spinners, and kids no longer play GameBoy, but Ninento Switch, and teens don’t ride skateboards but electric skateboards, and college kids don’t smoke flower but dabs, but all in all, the 90’s vibes seem to be back in full swing.

Nowhere is this clearer than in the fashion world.

Let’s take a gander at some of the most iconic 90’s fashion trends that are back and taking over the world by storm.

ROUND GLASSES

While Lennon first made round glasses a staple of counterculture, it was Oasis’ front man Noel Gallagher and other 90’s Britpop revivalists who made them more than a Beatles Halloween costume, securing them as a definitive 90’s fashion trend.

And for that, we thank you.

BIG OL’ HOOP EARRINGS

“Don’t be fooled by the studs that I got, I wear big ‘ol hoops when I’m hanging on the block. I used to date the villain from that film Mallrats, I’m pretty sure his name was Ben Affleck.”

Those were the words to that J. Lo song right? It was definitely something like that.

Either way, those big ass hoops J. Lo used to rock in the 90’s are freaking back in action.

NEON, NEON, NEON

Back in the 90’s people liked wearing loud colors. That meant hella big doses of neon.

Hella was a word people used in the 90’s that meant extremely or totally.

Totally was a word people used in the 90’s that meant totes.

Perhaps the greatest instance of this 90’s fashion trend appeared in the oft’ studied classic film, Batman & Robin, featuring the legendary actor Chris O’ Donnell. You know, this guy:

There’s an epic scene in the movie where a neon gang of street hooligans give the Batman some trouble. This scene had a big shout out in last season of Stranger Things.

RIDICULOUS PLATFORM SANDALS

That’s right! People are wearing these crazy ass 90’s platform shoes again.

Does this mean a Spice Girls reunion tour?

We can only hope.

Who’s my favorite Spice Girl?

Uh, Posh Spice, duh.

She’s so cold, yet somehow so inviting.

BACKPACKS (FOR ADULTS AND KIDDIES!)

In case you missed it, even bigwig executives have ditched the briefcase for a backpack.

It’s a wonder it took so long really. To think people used to keep their stuff in a leather box that they had carry around with one hand… why?

FLANNEL SHIRTS

While many a fashion blog has claimed flannel is back, I would counter with the point that it never really left.

Plaid and flannel have been a counterculture mainstay for centuries.

Don’t believe me? Well, then watch this video. You’d be crazy to argue against a YouTube video.

DUNGAREE OVERALLS

People loved overalls in the 90’s. Except for when they had to a use a public restroom, which required getting pretty much naked in order to pee.

The public opinion is pretty much the same now.

Not much changes.

HIGH WAISTED PANTS FOR WOMEN

In the 90’s, there was a show called Friends about a bunch of people who wore high waisted pants and didn’t really have jobs, but were somehow rich enough to live in a sick NYC apartment.

Today, there’s a show called Keeping Up With the Kardashians about a bunch of people who wear high waisted pants and don’t really have jobs, but are somehow rich enough to live in a sick L.A. mansion.

C’est la vie.

CHOKER NECKLACES

During peak 90’s, you’d have been hard off trying to find a neck that didn’t have a choker of some sort around it. Every scene had their own version of this 90’s fashion trend.

The preps had Puka shells, the stoners had hemp, and the goths had leather dog collars…

Everyone loved chokers. And now they’re back!

WIDE LEGGED PANTS YA’LL

Lastly, and most importantly, on our list 90’s fashion trend comeback are wide legged pants.

Now, when it comes to 90’s wide legged pants, no brand represents the trend more than yours truly. Here at JNCO, we take great pride in being the OG of epic 90’s wide legged jeans.

Thankfully, people still know what’s cool and we’re going stronger than ever.
